Blog.
Join us for wildlife stories, field notes, and plenty of coastal surprises - from sea lions at the marina to hidden tide pools and a shop full of nature-inspired art.
I started Salt + Noelle because I love wildlife - and honestly, I got tired of seeing nature and travel stories that felt out of reach. Everything either looked photoshopped, staged, or like it required a $20K expedition just to get a glimpse of the real thing. I wanted to share the coast and its wild moments the way I actually experience them: with patience, curiosity, and a camera slung over my shoulder.
This blog is for anyone who’s ever wished they could see more wildlife, but didn’t know where to start - or who just wanted an honest look at what’s really out there, not just the highlight reel. My photography is grounded in real fieldwork, not perfection, and my stories are about what I actually see and feel on the trail, the coast, and everywhere in between.
If you’re craving authentic tips, field notes, and a sense of what to actually expect when you head outside, you’re in the right place. I hope these essays and photos help you feel a little more connected to the wild, and maybe inspire you to slow down and see it for yourself.
I write from the coast, the trail, and sometimes the passenger seat. Thanks for being here - and for wanting something authentic.

Brandt’s Cormorants Nesting at Moss Landing 🪹🪶
Mornings at Moss Landing mean waking up to the chaos and color of Brandt’s cormorant nesting season. From a boat just after sunrise, I watched dozens of cormorants fuss over nests, steal the best seaweed, and (if you caught the timing right) flash that electric blue throat patch that only appears during breeding season. Not every bird shows the blue: it’s most vivid in adult males, subtler in females, and completely absent in juveniles. This week’s Wildlife Wednesday is all about those small moments and honest details - real-time field notes from the heart of a coastal colony.
Sea Lions at the Marina ⚓️☀️
This week's Wildlife Wednesday stays local with the California sea lions of Marina del Rey. After a year of weekend visits to Burton Chace Park, I'm starting to recognize the regulars. Plus: important NOAA guidelines for keeping your distance.
Bubbling Shore Crabs and the Art of Hiding in Plain Sight 🦀🫧
I spotted this shore crab deep in a crevice, completely covered in foam. Initially, I expected it to stay hidden. Instead, it emerged from the rocks and positioned itself in the open sunlight. When exposed during low tide, these crabs blow bubbles through their gill chambers to maintain moisture - tiny saltwater humidifiers built into their faces.
Squirrels! Burrowed In, Fluffed Out, and Watching You Snack 🐿️🥜
We tend to think wildlife means rare or hard to find. But sometimes the most interesting animals are the ones judging you from three feet away. This week's Wildlife Wednesday features squirrels doing what they do best: pancake impressions, judging tourists, and reminding us why sharing snacks is a terrible idea.

A Crab Claw and No Intention of Sharing 🦦🍽️
Caught mid-snack with a crab claw in one paw, this Elkhorn Slough otter wasn’t in the mood to share. A crunchy little moment from the coast.
