Welcome to the Coastal Café
⛵️ WHAT YOU'RE WATCHING
Live from our dockside balcony overlooking Channel Islands Harbor. Across the water is a public kayak and SUP launch where paddlers launch throughout the day. Competitive rowers from Channel Islands Rowing Club slice through during training sessions. Duffy boats cruise past. The Scarlett Belle paddlewheel riverboat glides through during holidays and events. Fishing charters and sailboats head out to sea. Birds flying overhead, swimming through the channel. Great blue herons hunt along the waterline (Frank, the local regular, sleeps on the sailboats in the middle of the frame and has mastered the art of looking unbothered while standing on someone else's property).
In the foreground, our bird feeders. House finches battling for prime spots. Hummingbirds treating the feeders like personal territory (Chip, our resident male Allen's hummingbird and self-appointed feeder guardian, has strong opinions about who gets to eat). Doves, goldfinches, and whatever else decides to show up.
One elusive harbor seal swims through regularly. Sea lions pass through but haven't hauled out since the dredging work. At night, you'll see stars, planes passing overhead, harbor lights reflecting on the water. This is a working marina, 24/7.
🎼 ABOUT THE AUDIO
Right now, you're hearing ambient harbor sounds, not live audio. This is a working marina with live-aboard neighbors, and we're not about to broadcast someone's private conversation. We're actively building integration with our BirdWeather station so you'll hear isolated bird calls as they're detected.
Our station (No. 22723) uses sound recognition software to identify bird species vocalizing across the harbor in real time. Explore live detections and listen to our recordings on Birdweather.
🩵 WHO WE ARE
I'm Alexis Noelle, and this is Salt + Noelle, my coastal conservation studio. Michael and I live dockside at Channel Islands Harbor, so this view is our backyard. I document coastal wildlife through photography, video, and long-form storytelling. This livestream is an extension of that work.
Everything we do follows our Admire from Afar™ methodology. Long lenses, patient observation, zero interference. The animal's well-being comes first, the creative result comes second. Always. Read more about our ethics.
We step into frame occasionally to refill feeders, adjust gear, or photograph wildlife with the field rig. We'll be out of frame shortly.
✨ WHY FEEDERS?
Wildlife and humans share this space daily. These feeders existed before we arrived, but without them, many of these birds would be eating discarded fries and litter. Our station provides species-appropriate, nutritionally balanced food as a better alternative.
We also maintain a shallow water fountain with stones for safe drinking and bathing. It's cleaned regularly and designed so birds and bees can access fresh water without drowning. The harbor itself is saltwater, so freshwater sources are essential.
Beyond feeders, we grow native and pollinator-friendly plants like Mandevilla and Tecoma Bells (Cape Honeysuckle) that provide natural nectar sources for hummingbirds and pollinators year-round.
Note: You might spot birds on the balcony floor below the camera's view. There's a ground-level feeding and water station down there with dove-friendly food and fresh water. If you see a Dark-eyed Junco or dove hanging out below frame, don't worry. They're eating well.
❣️ LOCATION NOTE
This stream broadcasts from private property at Channel Islands Harbor. Please do not attempt to access. The harbor has plenty of public docks, waterfront walkways, and restaurants if you want to visit. Channel Islands Harbor is beautiful and accessible, just not from our balcony.
